Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Type 3A Driving Record, and why do I need it for Defensive Driving?

A Type 3A Driving Record is a certified version of your driving history in Texas that includes all accidents and moving violations. You need it because most Texas courts require this specific version to prove you are eligible to have a ticket dismissed via a defensive driving course.

In Texas, you are typically eligible to take a Defensive Driving course (also known as a Driver Safety Course) for ticket dismissal once every 12 months. This timeframe is calculated from the date of your last violation, not the date you completed the previous course.

How long does a TDLR-approved Defensive Driving course take?

By state law, all TDLR-approved courses must be at least 6 hours long. This includes 5 hours of instructional content and 1 hour of required breaks. Many online providers allow you to log in and out, so you don’t have to complete the full 6 hours in a single sitting.

To be eligible for ticket dismissal, you generally must:

Possess a valid non-commercial Texas driver’s license.

Admit guilt or plead “no contest” to the court.

Not have been speeding at 25 mph or more over the limit.

Have been cited for a moving violation that does not involve a construction zone with workers present.
